GFF Format

I would like to devote this message to an overview of the GFF file format, which is very widely used in bioinformatics for structuring, storing and transmitting data on the functional elements of the genome. This post will start a series of stories not only about specifying a GFF data structure, but also about loading GFF files into the R workspace, converting them into objects of the GRanges and TxDb classes, analyzing the structure of such objects and using them in transcriptome research.
